Neighbourhood Watch Project
Introduction
The provision of services needs awareness of the expactations of community. The involvement of the community in the identification of problems and their solution is what is called community policing. Needless to say, this approach has a say in all aspects of policing work.
In order to promote community based policing, District Police Rajanpur has designed and implemented a community based initiative in a selected area of City Rajanpur..
This initiative is based on the realization that a transformation to community based approaches is a difficult task and such a transition requires a long term commitment and phased approach. The project is enriched by the experience of certain police units that success requires a comprehensive plan, total commitment, community and political support and time.
Project Description
The Project is based in a locality in Rajanpur city is called the Neighborhood Watch Project Rajanpur. It proposes to enhance community involvement in patrolling and preventive functions of the Police and increasing police responsiveness to complaints and non crime based requests for assistance.
Its objectives are
- Involving the community in crime prevention, detection and prosecution
- Promoting confidence in police by increasing police responsiveness and public involvement in certain policing decisions.
- Promoting public awareness about opportunistic crime, basic precautions and police services
- Promoting public awareness about rights
- Promoting voluntary provision of information regarding suspects and illegal activities
- Develop working procedures for citizen engagement and participation in policing work
Project working
The community policing effort will comprise of
- Formulation of a central citizen – police committee and the appointment of street coordinators
- Introduction of morning and evening patrols in each beat of the locality ( Each patrol will consist of one Head Constable and two constables
- Maintenance and follow up of complaints
- Non crime based assistance to local residents
- Increased availability of police resources in the target area
- Sharing of resources for better policing services. This would include provision of 23 police officers of various rank, equipment and transportation. The community contribution includes provision of an office building.
